Job Description – Wind Turbine Technician (Climber)

Position: Wind Turbine Technician – Climber
Industry: Renewable Energy / New Wind Farm Construction and Repowering
Employment Type: Full-Time / Project-Based
Work Location: Various Wind Farm Project Sites Nationwide

Position Summary

Wind Turbine Technicians (Climbers) to assist with the mechanical assembly, installation, and repowering of wind turbines.

This position primarily involves wind turbine erection and repowering projects. Technicians climb inside turbine towers using internal ladders and fall protection systems to access tower sections, the nacelle, hub, and other turbine components.

Technicians are responsible for connecting and securing turbine tower sections during erection, performing mechanical assembly, bolt torqueing, and tensioning. Once the tower is erected, technicians assist with connecting and securing the hub and turbine blades as they are lifted and positioned by cranes operated by designated crane operators.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Climb internal wind turbine ladders to access elevated work areas, including tower sections, the nacelle, and hub.
  • Connect and secure wind turbine tower sections during tower erection.
  • Assist with wind turbine repowering projects, including removal, replacement, and installation of existing mechanical components.
  • Perform bolt inspections, torque verification, and tensioning procedures.
  • Utilize hydraulic torque wrenches, tensioning equipment, impact tools, and other mechanical hand tools.
  • Coordinate with onsite supervisors and crane crews during component installation and connection activities.
  • Follow manufacturer installation procedures, project specifications, and quality control requirements.
  • Identify and report mechanical defects, damaged components, and safety concerns.
  • Maintain tools, equipment, and work areas in a safe and organized condition.
  • Follow all site-specific safety procedures, including fall protection, lockout/tagout, and rescue protocols.

Job Requirements

  • Previous experience in wind turbine construction, repowering, mechanical installation, or component replacement preferred.
  • Experience climbing wind turbines and working at elevated heights.
  • Ability to safely climb internal turbine ladders while wearing required personal protective equipment.
  • Experience operating hydraulic torque and tensioning equipment.
  • Ability to read and follow mechanical drawings, installation instructions, and manufacturer specifications.
  • Familiarity with wind turbine components, including tower sections, nacelles, hubs, and blades.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding work in varying weather conditions.
  • Strong understanding of construction site safety procedures.
  • Ability to work extended hours, overtime, and project-based schedules.
  • Willingness to travel to wind farm project sites nationwide.

Preferred Certifications

  • OSHA 10 or OSHA 30
  • First Aid / CPR
  • Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) Training
  • Wind Turbine Rescue Training

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

  • Climb internal turbine ladders to heights exceeding 200 feet, depending on turbine model.
  • Work inside turbine towers, nacelles, and hubs.
  • Perform repetitive climbing, bending, kneeling, lifting, and mechanical assembly activities.
  • Wear full-body fall protection harnesses and required PPE.
  • Work in confined or restricted-access areas within wind turbine structures.
  • Lift and handle tools, equipment, and materials within applicable safety limits.
  • Work in varying environmental conditions, including heat, cold, and wind.

Scope of Work – Workers’ Compensation Classification

This position involves mechanical assembly and installation of wind turbine components during tower erection and repowering projects.
